The Soul of Burt Bacharach

October 28, 2025

The popular composer Burt Bachrach had some roots in jazz. Shortly after he died in February 2023 at the age of 94, the Associated Press’ Hillel Italie pointed out that Bacharach, “while still a minor, would sneak into jazz clubs, bearing a fake ID, to hear such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie.”

Bachrach recalled those experiences in his memoir, Anyone Who Had a Heart Harper: 2013). “What I heard in those clubs,” he wrote, “turned my head around.” He also studied under classical composer Darius Milhaud, who was a mentor to Dave Brubeck.

On Saturday, November 8, Kean Stage’s Enlow Recital Hall in Hillside, NJ, will present two performances, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., entitled “The Soul of Burt Bacharach”. A large group of vocalists and instrumentalists will perform some of Bacharach’s greatest hits such as “What the World Needs Now”, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”, and “I Say a Little Prayer”.
