Sheila Jordan at Bethany Baptist Church

January 10, 2025

In October 2021, vocalist Sheila Jordan performed at the Greenwich Village club Mezzrow with pianist Alan Broadbent and bassist Harvie S. That engagement resulted in a Cellar Live album, Live at Mezzrow. Reviewing it for Jersey Jazz, Joe Lang, pointing out that Jordan was 93 years old at the time, wrote that she “was schooled in bebop, and the influence of that music has endured throughout her career . . . Those in the audience at Mezzrow were treated to some special music, and this recording now allows that experience to be shared with a wider audience.”

At 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, Jordan, now 96, will perform at Newark’s Bethany Baptist Church Jazz Vespers. She will be joined by guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, drummer Billy Drummond, and Harvie S. The church is located at 275 West Market St. Admission is free.

The Bethany Baptist Church Jazz Vespers is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
