At 8 p.m.this Saturday, November 2, the Princeton University Faculty Jazz Septet will present a concert at the University’s Richardson Hall, preceded by the jazz program’s top jazz small group.
The Faculty Septet includes Rudresh Mahanthappa (Associate Director of Princeton’s Program in Musical Performance) on alto saxophone, Ted Chubb on trumpet, Michelle Lordi on vocals, student Charles Dutta on piano, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Jerome Jennings on drums.
Two Princeton graduates — saxophonist Isaac Yi and trumpeter Gabriel Chalick are recipients of New Jersey Jazz Society scholarships and will be performing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, at the NJJS Jersey Jazz LIVE! concert in Madison, NJ.
Mahanthappa has been named Alto Saxophonist of the Year several times by DownBeat’s Jazz Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association. Chubb is Vice President of Jazz Education and Associate Producer for Jazz House Kids and is a member of the artistic leadership and production team responsible for curating all events for the Montclair Jazz Festival. He is also one of the NJJS Scholarship judges.
Lordi joined the Princeton jazz faculty in January. AllAboutJazz’s Geno Thackara called the mood of her 2023 self-produced album, Two Moons, “somewhere between a late-night set in a small jazz club and a round of spooky stories around the campfire.” Parrish, a member of tenor saxophonist Houston Person’s quartet, performed at NJJS’ 50th anniversary concert in October 2022. Jennings’ debut recording The Beast (CD Baby: 2021), received a four-star rating in DownBeat Magazine.
