June 1st Jazz in NJ

May 26, 2025

Two concerts of note on Sunday, June 1, in New Jersey: The Ted Chubb Quintet at 2 p.m. at the Metuchen Public Library and the Behn Gillece/Brian Betz Duo at 3 p.m. at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts in Toms River.

In his review of Chubb’s 2017 Unit Records’ album, Gratified Never Satisfied, Troy Dostert of AllAboutJazz described Chubb as “a disciplined, meticulous soloist, and whether he’s providing tenacious licks with upbeat material like the record’s title track or pensive musings on the ballad standard ‘My Ideal’, Chubb does justice to the music without ever reaching too far beyond the comfort zone.”

Chubb (photo above) will be joined in Metuchen by alto saxophonist Bruce Williams, bassist TomDiCarlo, pianist Oscar Perez, and drummer Carmen Intorre. The Metuchen Public Library is located at 480 Middlesex Ave. in Metuchen. The concert, part of the Cornerstone series presented by Metuchen Jazz, is free, but registration is required at: https://bit.ly/foma-ted-chubb-june-2025.

When Behn Gillece (photo below) appears with guitarist Brian Betz on June 1 at the Grunin Center, he will be performing some selections from his new Posi-Tone album, Pivot Point, which is being released this month. “It’ll be a great mix of material,” he said, “and we’re looking forward to sharing it with the audience.”

The New Jersey Jazz Society is a proud supporter of Grunin’s Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon series, which is made possible through funding from the Wintrode Family Foundation and the Ocean County College Foundation. The Behn Gillece/Brian Betz. Concert begins at 3 p.m. in the Gia Maione Prima Foundation Studio Theatre (Building 12). The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts is located on College Drive on the campus of Ocean County College.
