The Jazz Journalists Association recently announced its award winners for 2021, and Jersey Jazz is proud to announce that two of the winners graced the cover of the magazine earlier this year. In March, our cover story was on Artemis, winner of JJA’s Mid-Size Ensemble of the Year. Our April cover story was on pianist Emmet Cohen and his new Mack Avenue album, Future Stride. Cohen was named Up and Coming Musician of the Year.
In addition, our February issue featured a review of Life in E Flat: The Autobiography of Phil Woods by Phil Woods and Ted Panken (Cymbal Press), followed by an article on Phil Woods’ Legacy, with comments from eight current alto saxophonists. Life in E Flat was the JJA winner for Book of the Year About Jazz.
Other awards included: Bassist Ron Carter, Lifetime Achievement in Jazz; Drummer Terri Lynne Carrington, Musician of the Year; Scott Robinson, a double winner for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year and Multiple Reeds Player of the Year; and WBGO’s Gary Walker, the Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Excellence in Broadcasting.
