This year’s Jazz@ThePoint festival, held by the South Jersey Jazz Society in Somers Point, will celebrate the country’s 250th birthday by honoring the music and legacy of Louis Armstrong.
The festival will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 15 with a special presentation by Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections at the Louis Armstrong House Museum and author of three books about Armstrong. Riccardi will trace Armstrong’s career, personality, and lasting influence on American music.
That presentation will be followed by 7 p.m. concerts given by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon (photo above) on Friday, October 16, and trumpeter Jon Faddis (photo below) on Saturday, October 17.
The Ricky Riccardi presentation will be held at Gregory’s Bar, located at 900 Shore Road in Somers Point. The Gordon and Faddis concerts will be at the Gateway Playhouse, 738 Bay Ave. At 9:30 p.m. on the 16th and 17th, vocalist Paula Johns will present a free tribute to Ella Fitzgerald at Gregory’s Bar.
