As in previous years, scholarship grants were awarded on Sunday April 19th, 2015 at the New Jersey Jazz Society monthly social held at Shanghai Jazz in Madison NJ to four deserving students pursuing degrees in Jazz Studies at each of the four New Jersey Universities offering such degree programs.
Eric Zolan, Guitar, William Paterson University (Jack Stine Scholarship). Eric hails from Bridgeport, CT and was a featured performer on Bridgeport’s local News 12 station as a student at Back Country Jazz, an organization enhancing jazz education in Connecticut schools. Eric says some of his fastest learning came during the impromptu, after-hours jam time provided to him by music teacher, Rob Maresca.
Adam Malarich, Trumpet, Rowan University (Bill Walters Scholarship). Rowan University attracts players from the best high school programs in South Jersey and the suburbs of Philadelphia, and Adam is no exception. A freshman at Rowan, Adam is from Camp Hills, PA, where his sixth-grade teacher got him started on an intensive practice program known as Jazz Etudes.
Anthony Bianco, Bass, New Jersey City University (Don Robertson Scholarship). Anthony grew up in a musical family in Scotch Plains. He used his versatility as a bass player to play in the four jazz bands featured at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. At 22 he is already a working musician as he completes his degree. He tips his hat to bass teacher Andy Eulau for sharing his expertise.
Devenny Bennett, Trumpet, Rutgers University (Pee Wee Russell Scholarship). Devenny is from Bridgewater, NJ, and studies both classical and jazz trumpet.
